World Refugee Day, June 20th!

June 20th is World Refugee Day. World Refugee Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on the 4th of December 2000. World Refugee Day aims to increase global awareness of issues relating to the support and protection of refugees, and to deepen the understanding of the activities undertaken by the United Nations and various NGOs.

Following the United Nations' establishment of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in 1951, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has worked to protect refugees all over the world. Japan became a signatory of the Convention in 1981, and is therefore committed to protecting refugees in accordance with the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.

Western Japan's World Refugee Day assembly was first held in 2006, which means we have been dealing with the problems faced by refugees in Japan for nearly 10 years.

The Number of Refugees in Japan is
Growing Rapidly! 5,000 Asylum Seekers
Now Need Our Protection!

As a result of conflict and other troubles in various parts of the world, the number of refugees seeking asylum in Japan is increasing rapidly. 5,000 applications were made in 2014, but only 11 of these applicants were recognised as refugees. Most refugees lead uncertain and unstable lives here in Japan. These people have the same hopes and desires as the rest of us: to live with their families in a peaceful and secure society.

We invite you all to think about Japan's approach to issues of asylum, and to consider them in relation to the UN's efforts to support refugees all over the world.
